How we are paid

Upnova Debt Solutions is a marketing company. We connect consumers with independent companies that provide debt resolution, loan and credit counseling programs. These companies may pay us when a consumer we refer enrolls in a program or when a program payment is made. This compensation does not change the price you pay. We will tell you which company provides your program before you enroll.

Important facts about debt resolution

Debt resolution (also called debt settlement) is not right for everyone. Before you enroll, the program provider must tell you, and we want you to know:

  • Time: programs usually take about 24 to 48 months. Your provider will tell you how long before an offer may be made to each creditor.
  • Savings needed: you set aside a monthly amount in a dedicated account that you own and control. You can withdraw your money at any time, and leave the program at any time without a penalty.
  • Fees: no fee is charged until at least one debt is settled, you have agreed to the settlement, and at least one payment has been made to the creditor under it. Fees are explained in writing before you enroll.
  • Credit: not paying your creditors while you save is likely to hurt your credit score and history.
  • Collections and lawsuits: creditors are not required to negotiate or accept a settlement. They may continue collection efforts, add late fees and interest, or sue you.
  • Taxes: forgiven debt may be treated as taxable income. Talk to a tax professional.
  • Not all debt qualifies: secured debts (such as home and car loans), most federal student loans and taxes are usually not included.
  • Availability: programs are not available in every state, and minimum debt amounts apply.

Loans and credit counseling

Loan approval, rates and terms are decided by the lender and depend on your credit. Credit counseling is provided by independent nonprofit agencies.
