Questions
Questions people ask us
If your question is not here, call us. We are happy to explain.
Can creditors take my Social Security?
In most cases, credit card companies and other private creditors cannot garnish Social Security benefits. Federal debts, such as back taxes or federal student loans, and court-ordered support are exceptions. We are happy to talk through your situation.
Does it cost anything to talk to you?
No. The call is free, and you never have to sign up for anything.
Can my son or daughter join the call?
Yes, and we encourage it. Anyone you trust is welcome on the call.
Will this affect my credit?
Talking to us and answering our questions does not. Some programs can lower your credit score, especially debt resolution, and your specialist will explain exactly how before you decide.
Who provides the programs?
Upnova works with independent partner companies. Before you enroll, you are told which company provides your program, and you review its terms with that company directly.
Do you sell my information?
No. We never sell your personal information. We share it only with the partner company that provides the program you ask about, so they can help you.
What kinds of debt can you help with?
Mostly unsecured debt: credit cards, medical bills, personal loans and some collection accounts. Home loans, car loans, federal student loans and back taxes are usually not included. Your specialist will go through each of your accounts with you.
What if I owe less than $4,000?
Our partner programs start at about $4,000 of debt. If you owe less, we have put together free ways to get help, including nonprofit credit counseling.
How long does a debt resolution program take?
Most programs take about 2 to 4 years, depending on how much you owe and how much you can set aside each month. Some debts may be settled sooner.
Are there fees?
Talking to us is free. Debt resolution companies charge a fee only after a debt is settled and you have agreed to the settlement. The fee is a share of the debt enrolled or of the amount saved, and it is explained in writing before you sign anything.
Could a creditor still sue me?
Yes, it is possible. Creditors are not required to accept a settlement, and some may continue collection or take legal action while you are in a program. Your specialist will explain the risks honestly.
Will I owe taxes on forgiven debt?
Possibly. The IRS may treat forgiven debt over $600 as income. Many people qualify for an exception, for example if they owed more than they owned. A tax professional can tell you what applies to you.
Can I stop at any time?
Yes. You can leave a program at any time, and money you have saved in your own account is yours.
How do I stop calls or texts from you?
Reply STOP to any text, tell your specialist, call (800) 000-0000, or use our stop calls and texts page. We honor every request.
