Smaller balances

Good news: there is free help for this

Our partner programs start at about $4,000 of debt. For smaller balances, these free options often work better, and they cost you nothing.

Free

Nonprofit credit counseling

A certified counselor reviews your budget with you, by phone or online, and may set up a plan that lowers interest rates. Find one near you through the National Foundation for Credit Counseling.

Free

Call your card company

Ask for their “hardship program”. Many lower the interest rate or the monthly payment for a while if you explain what changed, such as a medical bill or a drop in income.

Free

Know your rights

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau explains how to deal with debt collectors, and what they are not allowed to do.

A tip that helps: write down every bill, the balance and the minimum payment on one sheet of paper. It makes the call with a counselor much quicker, and it often shows which bill to pay down first.

Upnova is not connected with the organizations above. If your total debt grows above $4,000, we would be glad to talk.
